Unsatisfied with the inadequate in-home care service provided to his young son, David Cogan decided he did not want others to go through the same experience.
In January, Mr. Cogan franchised Synergy HomeCare, 10240 W. Bell Road, Suite A, an existing in-home, non-medical [home care] company, and moved it to Sun City for individuals requiring daily living assistance.
It was an opportunity Mr. Cogan could not pass up as he wanted those in need to get the daily attention and assistance they needed, while assuring them they could still live in the comfort of their own home.
“When you trust someone to take care of a loved on, you want to make sure they are the real deal,” Mr. Cogan said.
More than 25 percent of the U.S. adult population has provided care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend during the past year. Based on current census data, that translates into more than 50 million people, according to the National Family Caregivers Association.
People 65 and over currently represent 12.4 percent of the population and that number is expected to grow to 20 percent by the year 2030.
“With Baby Boomers aging, the demand for elder care is going to soar,” Mr. Cogan said. “Yet, it is still an industry lacking professional standards. That is what we are trying to change.”
Synergy HomeCare provides non-medical home care to people in their homes. The more than 100 caregivers working for the Sun City franchise are available every day to the convalescing or disabled and anyone else who needs help with daily activities.
“Home care isn’t from 9 to 5, Monday through Friday,” Mr. Cogan said. “We’ve had calls at two in the morning from customers who needed a caregiver in their home in a few hours.”
And care giving is no longer predominantly a women’s issue. According to the same national Family Caregivers Association study, men now make up 44 percent of the care giving population, making at-home service big business. The value of services is estimated to generate $257 billion a year.
“This shows there is a need for these types of services,” Mr. Cogan said.
