ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and is commonly known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease". ALS is a devastating neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Essentially, the muscles in the body receive no nourishment and so, over time, they waste away. This is a progressive disease resulting in decreased muscle movement throughout the body. Some of the early symptoms of the disease include muscle stiffness and weakness and even paralysis. Later, other symptoms follow like difficulty with speech, swallowing and breathing.
